SpineCamp: Agenda and Outline

Group Session 1: Mechanisms, Movements, and Metrics:

  • You will be introduced to the 3 main mechanisms of pain/injury and why knowing them is more important than trying to figure out the “part” of your low back that is causing the pain. You will also recognize how understanding these mechanisms determine the movement(s) you will use to reduce or eliminate your pain and prevent further harm or reinjury.

  • You will be taught, and work through, 8 simple movements, performed in 3 positions, that reduces or eliminates your pain, often quickly, no matter when or where it occurs. You will also learn how to distinguish “hurt from harm” and the one basic rule of “motion repetition” that indicates if a movement should be continued or stopped.

  • Metrics refers to learning how to keep score correctly. By this, I mean keeping score the way it is measured in the clinical world. This does several good things for you. First, it gives you an idea of how real progress is defined and the amount of progress you should expect. Second, your score will tell you if you are making the progress that you should be making. Third, if some type of formal treatment is desired, these metrics will help you make accurate comparisons between different types of treatment, and measure your progess (or lack of) with any treatment you decide on. Quite simply…. Knowing the metrics keeps things objective, honest, and real.

  • Session 1 is typically held on a Saturday, from 9am to Noon (Eastern). You will be expected to begin working on your movements after this session concludes. I will remain on-line and available until 3 PM for any questions that you may have as you continue to learn your movements.

Group Session 2: Mistakes and Mastery

  • The first part of this session is devoted to illustrating, discussing, and helping you avoid the common mistakes that often lead to bigger problems. One of the worst of these is “becoming your MRI.” (or other imaging) Research has clearly shown that what is seen on imaging, except in only a few situations, has little if anything to do with the pain you experience. I will show you what you need to know to make your MRI (or other imaging) work for you not against you. Another common mistake is what I call “Turn Up the Noise So I Don’t Hear the Squeak.” You will learn about these, and many more, so that you become increasingly confident about your ability to defeat your low back pain rather than be held hostage by it.

  • The second part of the group session involves learning how to use “Movement Modification” Here, I will discuss and illustrate different scenarios that you may encounter and what you can do if back pain strikes in these situations. Examples include pain while at a desk job, increasing pain when traveling, pain worsening during heavy physical work, and even pain developing or worsening during recreational activities like golf, tennis, weight lifting, etc. Numerous other examples will be illustrated. I will go over the what, when, why, and how to use and/or modify your basic movements according to the situation you are in. You will also be introduced to the basic techniques of long-term spinal stability and how you can implement them in your daily routine.

  • The third part of this session will help you develop a personalized Relapse Prevention Plan. This involves being able to scan a situation, recognize pain triggers and take appropriate proactive, protective, measures. You will also become familiarized with how to use reinforcement techniques if you can’t avoid a potentially harmful environment or task.

  • Session 2 is usually held, Sunday, the day after Session 1, from Noon to 3pm (Eastern). I remain available until 6 pm for any questions that develop as you are practicing these movement modifications and more advanced spinal stability techniques.

Private Individual Coaching Sessions:

  • Each participant will receive a 30 minute, private, coaching session.

  • The main purpose of this is to review your movements, rectify any difficultites you are experiencing with them, and further refine the movement modifications applicable to your situation. You will also be able to ask questions that relate to the specific circumstances of your life and get personalized input to help the benefits of this program last.

  • Appointments must be requested in advance, confirmed, and scheduled.

  • Times available for private coaching are:

    • Monday from 6-9 pm.

    • Tuesday from 9 am-1pm and 6pm-9pm.

    • For those times not booked, I remain available as needed for questions and assistance. Make sure to check the SpineCamp+ Facebook page for notification about open times.

Group Recap and Review:

  • The final group session will give you additional time to ask questions and get the answers you need to clarify how to apply this system in your day to day life. It is also the time to refine any movements that you may be having trouble with.

  • You will also have the opportunity to give, and get, input from other members of your group. Some of the best ideas come from people who struggle with a problem rather than those who treat it. The group dynamic will help you grow by hearing the success and modifications of others. You can help them grow by sharing your own.

  • Group Recaps are usually held on Wednesday’s from 6-9pm. However, I will remain on-line until all of your questions are answered.

SpineCamp+ Private Facebook Group

Each participant will be offered membershp to the SpineCamp+ Facebook group. The purpose of this group is to provide a regular forum of communication, support, notification about updated program materials, and the publication of new methods of helpful self management techniques/tips.
